Pine needles are the whole problem

Most of Jacksonville sits under pine. Slash pine, longleaf and loblolly drop needles almost year-round with a heavy fall from October into December, and a pine needle is about the worst thing a gutter guard has to stop. It is thin enough to slip through a screen, long enough to bridge a reverse-curve hood and stack up on top, and once it is in the gutter it mats into a felt that holds water against the seams and plugs the downspout outlet solid.

Leaf guard gutters Jacksonville homeowners get sold at the door are usually designed around maple and oak leaves in a northern yard. They do not do well here. What matters is the debris:

• Pine needles (Mandarin, Julington Creek, Argyle Forest, the Westside, Fleming Island, anywhere near a preserve): fine stainless micro-mesh only.
• Live oak leaves and catkins (Riverside, Avondale, Ortega, San Marco, Ponte Vedra): the small leaves get through screens; the spring catkins mat on any flat guard. Micro-mesh again, with a hose-off in April.
• Laurel and water oak leaves, sweetgum balls, magnolia leaves (older neighborhoods everywhere): large debris. A plain aluminum screen keeps it out for a third of the price of mesh.
• Sabal palm fronds and seed clusters (the Beaches, Intracoastal West): too big for any guard to matter. The frond sits on top; the seeds get in. Screen plus a fall cleaning.
• Crape myrtle blossoms in June and July get past everything. Plan on one rinse.

The two types we install

Stainless micro-mesh, about $10–$18 per foot installed. A fine stainless weave on an aluminum frame, screwed to the front lip of the gutter and set at the roof pitch so debris slides off. It is the only guard we have seen keep pine straw out of a gutter year after year. Under pine it is what we recommend and what we put on our own houses.

Aluminum screen, about $5–$9 per foot. A perforated panel that stops large leaves and lets small stuff through. Fine under laurel oaks, sweetgums and magnolias; a waste of money under pine.

We do not install reverse-curve hoods. In a Jacksonville downpour the water overshoots the lip and pine straw rides the curve into the gutter anyway. The overshoot problem explains what we have seen. If you specifically want one, we will tell you why we would not.

Guards on gutters that are not ready for them

A guard on a gutter that leaks, sags or is undersized just seals in the problem. If the runs need work, that comes first, or the guards go into a replacement quote where they are cheapest because the crew is already at every foot of the gutter. A guard also cannot rescue a 50-foot run with one 2x3 downspout; it will overflow with clean water instead of dirty water. What happens after

Under pine with micro-mesh: a leaf blower along the roofline once a year, usually December after the needle drop. Under live oak: a hose from the ground each April to clear catkins off the mesh. That replaces two or three full cleanings a year, which is where the money comes back, typically in six to eight years under heavy trees. Under a yard with a couple of small ornamentals the math never works, and we will say so.
